THE WAHALA called B.E.C.E

Another year is here again and we’re going to abuse and torture our little brothers, sisters, nieces, nephew, sons and daughters at the basic level. Students at the SHS level who are older and matured used a month to write their WASSCE of 8 subjects.

Sometimes they get two or three days intervals after each paper to prepare for the next, which I think is very good. Grown up students at the tertiary level also use a month to write their examinations for things they’ve learnt within a semester but unfortunately our little brothers and sisters with average ages of 12-15 are made to write 9 papers in just a week and everyone is quite.

These children are examined on things they’ve learnt throughout their 9 years at basic school.

They are made to write 2 papers everyday. They leave home early in the morning and come home late and exhausted.

How can they prepare for the next day’s papers? Surprisingly, I hear people say “we all went through it”, but I ask myself, is it fair?

Let’s bear in mind that no matter how prepared and serious you were in class, you still need time to revise before such an important examination.

Because the results of your B.E.C.E affect your future.

Can’t the B.E.C.E time table be extended?
